Two Male Indie Dogs with Reactivity

Overview

Pepper, a young indie, displayed intense reactivity toward his elder canine housemate, Billu. Walks were chaotic, co-existence was strained, and fights became a looming threat.

Objectives

  • Decrease dog-dog aggression through physical and mental stimulation
  • Reintroduce calm cohabitation via structured play and rest
  • Muzzle and crate training for safety and management
  • Teach leash manners and focus-based engagement
  • Strengthen obedience communication for redirection

Approach

  • Week 1

Focused on physical and mental exercise. Introduced teethered decompression to teach energy regulation. Added structured cues for emotional control—e.g., arms folded = calm greeting, off-leash roughhousing = excitement outlet. Built food drive, focus and will to train

  • Week 2

Introduced foundational obedience (Sit, Down, No), leash pressure work, Bed & Crate commands. Continued daily exposure and desensitization.

  • Week 3

Practiced behavior proofing in various settings and with different handlers added environmental distractions (visitors, animals, new places) while strengthening command fluency.

  • Week 4

Reintroduced the dogs under calm, structured conditions. Trained owners to maintain leadership and prevent regression.Proofed crate training, conducted handler transfer sessions, vet visits, and cafe exposures.

Results

✅ Both dogs now sleep on the same couch
✅ Peaceful coexistence restored
✅ Rehoming avoided and walks made enjoyable

Conclusion

Timely intervention with behaviorally sound methods saved this family from crisis. When structure, exercise, and communication align, harmony follows—even between two reactive dogs.
