Fearful Indie Puppy Transformation
Project Overview
Dobby, a highly sensitive indie puppy with a traumatic past, showed signs of intense fear and nervous aggression. He froze at unfamiliar sounds, growled, refused walks, snapped at dogs, and displayed symptoms of separation anxiety and resource guarding.
Objectives
The primary objectives for this case were:
- Confidence Building
through daily exposure, FitPaws, and agility training.
- Crate & Bed Training
to promote independence and reduce anxiety.
- Leash Communication
to foster clarity and trust using techniques like auto-sit, focused left-side walking, and solid recall.
- Systematic Desensitization
to sounds, surfaces, environments, people, and stray dogs.
Approach
- Week 1
Focused on physical and mental exercise. Introduced teethered decompression to teach energy regulation. Added structured cues for emotional control—e.g., arms folded = calm greeting, off-leash roughhousing = excitement outlet. Built food drive to shift mindset from fear to problem-solving.
- Week 2
Introduced foundational obedience (Sit, Down, No), leash pressure work, Bed & Crate commands. Continued daily exposure and desensitization.
- Week 3
Added environmental distractions (visitors, animals, new places) while strengthening command fluency.
- Week 4
Proofed crate training, conducted handler transfer sessions, vet visits, and cafe exposures.
Results
- Improved Reliability & Communication
- Started going out for walks and started peeing & pooping during walks.
- No destruction of valuables
- Walks became stress-free and confident
- Snapping and growling reduced—Dobby became curious instead of defensive
- Effective utilisation of Basic Commands—sit, down, stay, heel, no, come, yes, art of doing nothing, crate training, bed training.
Conclusion
In just 4 weeks, this tailored training prevented emotional distress, property damage, and burnout—saving the family thousands in potential losses. Most importantly, it gave the dog a confident, happy life.
